Understanding Commercial Endorsement for RYA Qualifications

Updated: Jun 6

Obtaining your RYA qualifications is a crucial step for anyone looking to advance in the maritime industry. However, it’s important to note that if you attend an RYA Recognised Training Centre for assessments, your theory completion certificate from an online course will be marked as 'NOT INVIGILATED.' This status implies that your Day Skipper Practical certificate cannot be commercially endorsed.

Our classroom courses are always invigilated. If you require an invigilated exam, please get in touch to book.

What is a Commercial Endorsement?

A commercial endorsement allows you to operate as a skipper for commercial purposes. This endorsement is granted by the RYA and is essential for many people pursuing careers in the maritime industry.

Requirements for an RYA Yachtmaster

To obtain the RYA Yachtmaster certification, you must fulfill the following requirements:

  1. Certificate of Competence (following an exam)

  2. Medical Fitness Certificate

  3. Sea Survival Certificate

  4. RYA PPR Course Completion Certificate

  5. A fee payable to the RYA

Requirements for a Day Skipper

To qualify as a Day Skipper, you must complete the following:

  1. Day Skipper Practical Course Completion Certificate

  2. Day Skipper Shorebased Course Completion Certificate

The shorebased course can be undertaken either online or in the classroom. Regardless of the format, the exams need to be invigilated.

What is Assessment Invigilation?

Assessment invigilation involves having an RYA Instructor present during the assessment to ensure that you complete the exam without unwanted assistance. This verification helps to maintain the integrity of the exam process.

When is Invigilation Required?

Invigilation is not required in the following cases:

  • If you plan to use the qualification for leisure purposes (e.g., flotilla, charter, or cruising on your own boat).

  • If you want to qualify as an RYA Cruising Instructor or an RYA Yachtmaster™ Instructor.

  • For skippering vessels that are below 200GT.

  • If you are adding a Commercial Endorsement to a RYA Yachtmaster™ Coastal or Offshore Certificate of Competence.

However, invigilation is required in the following situations:

  • If you aim to study towards MCA large yacht qualifications, such as Officer of the Watch or Master 3000. In such cases, all your theory assessments must be invigilated.

  • If you intend to skipper vessels over 200GT.

  • If you want to use your RYA Day Skipper Certificate or Competence for commercial purposes, such as sea angling or commercial dive-boat operations within the UK. You will require a professional endorsement to your Day Skipper Certificate of Competence. This endorsement will allow you to skipper a small commercial vessel up to a 20-mile limit from the vessel’s home port if your Day Skipper shorebased exam is invigilated. If it is not, you will be limited to a 3-mile operation from the same home port.

  • For those taking the Ocean Yachtmaster™ oral examination, invigilation of the shorebased assessment is optional. However, lacking invigilation may require you to complete an additional theory paper during the oral examination.

How to Arrange Invigilation

If you require invigilation, we can assist you in arranging it, or you might choose to make your own arrangements independently.

Why Choose Invigilated Exams?

Opting for an invigilated exam can significantly enhance your credentials, especially if your long-term goals include operating commercially. An invigilated exam adds credibility to your qualifications, making you a more attractive candidate in a competitive job market. Whether you're skimming across the waves operating a small charter or managing large vessels, having the right qualifications is essential.

Conclusion

However, understanding the requirements for commercial endorsements and the importance of invigilation can significantly impact your ability to work in the maritime industry. By ensuring your assessments are invigilated, you can confidently pursue your maritime career, equipped with the knowledge and credentials to succeed.
